Going Solar, Step by Step: From First Quote to Flipping the Switch

A complete walkthrough of the residential solar process — evaluating your home, getting quotes, choosing equipment, financing, permits, installation, and what happens after.

Residential solar is a six-to-twelve-week process with a lot of moving parts and a sales industry that would prefer you not understand them. This guide lays out each stage so you can run the process rather than be run through it.

Stage 1: Is Your Home a Candidate?

Three things matter most:

Roof. South-facing is ideal; east and west are workable; north rarely pencils out. You want minimal shade between 9am and 3pm. The roof should have at least 10 to 15 years of life left, or plan to replace it first. Composition shingle and standing-seam metal are easiest; tile and slate cost more to install on.

Electricity cost. Find your true all-in rate by dividing your annual bill by annual kilowatt-hours. Above roughly 15 cents makes solar attractive; below 11 makes payback long.

Your utility’s export policy. Net metering at full retail is the best case. Net billing at a wholesale rate lengthens payback significantly and makes a battery more worthwhile. Look up your utility’s current policy and whether it is locked in for a term.

Stage 2: Understand the Money

Cost. National averages run about $2.50 to $3.50 per watt installed before incentives. A typical 7 to 8 kW system lands at $18,000 to $28,000.

Federal tax credit. Currently 30 percent of system cost, taken against federal taxes you owe. You need enough tax liability to use it, though it can carry forward.

State and local incentives. Vary from nothing to substantial. Check your state energy office and utility.

Financing options.

  • Cash: best return, simplest.
  • Solar loan: you own the system and keep the credit; watch for dealer fees baked into the price.
  • HELOC or home equity loan: often the cheapest borrowing, and the interest may be deductible since it improves the home.
  • Lease or PPA: no money down, but the third party keeps the incentives and the contract complicates a future sale. Read escalator clauses carefully.

Payback. Divide net cost by annual savings. Under 8 years is strong; 8 to 12 is reasonable; beyond 15 deserves a hard look.

Stage 3: Get Quotes the Right Way

Get at least three. Ask each for:

  • Total system size in kW DC and estimated annual production in kWh
  • Panel and inverter brand, model, and warranty terms
  • Total price, itemized, and price per watt
  • Whether the estimate includes permits, interconnection fees, and any roof work
  • Their license number, years in business, and NABCEP certification
  • Workmanship warranty length (10 years is common; 25 is excellent)
  • Production guarantee, if any

Compare on price per watt and estimated production, not the monthly payment a financed quote shows you.

Stage 4: Choose Equipment

Panels. Tier-one manufacturers with 25-year product and performance warranties. Efficiency above 20 percent is standard now. Higher efficiency matters if roof space is tight.

Inverters. String inverters are cheaper and fine for unshaded roofs. Microinverters or optimizers cost more but handle shade and let you monitor each panel. Warranty of 12 to 25 years.

Batteries. Worthwhile if you have net billing, time-of-use rates, or frequent outages. Otherwise they lengthen payback. Size to what you actually want to run during an outage.

Monitoring. Insist on app-based monitoring so you can see production and catch problems.

Stage 5: Contract, Permits, and Interconnection

Review the contract for scope, equipment, price, timeline, warranty, and cancellation terms. Do not sign under pressure; reputable installers do not need you to decide today.

The installer handles permits with your city and the interconnection application with your utility. This stage often takes the longest, four to eight weeks, and is mostly waiting.

Stage 6: Installation

Typically one to three days on site. Crews mount racking, set panels, run conduit, install the inverter and disconnects, and tie into your panel. Ask about roof penetration flashing methods; this is where leaks come from years later if done poorly.

Stage 7: Inspection and Permission to Operate

Your city inspects the installation. Then your utility installs a bidirectional meter or reprograms yours and issues permission to operate. Only then can you turn the system on. This step can take one to six weeks.

After Go-Live

  • Check your monitoring app monthly for expected production.
  • Keep panels reasonably clean; rain does most of the work in most climates.
  • Notify your homeowners insurer; most cover rooftop solar under the dwelling policy.
  • Keep all documents together for warranty claims and a future sale.

Solar done well is a 25-year asset. The difference between a good outcome and a disappointing one is almost always decided in Stages 1 through 3, before a single panel goes up.
